Assistance
League of Eugene offers numerous cleaning and hygiene supplies to homeless
low-income families who are entering St. Vincent de Paul’s “Connections
Transitional Housing Program”*. Lane County Extension Service
information as well as appropriate paperback books on childcare, housekeeping,
and cooking hints are included. These supplies are housed at St. Vincent’s
de Paul’s office and are available for families to select the
items they need.
This
project was started in 1997 and serves approximately 40 families a year.
To date over 225 families have benefited from this project.
Working
together, Assistance League of Eugene and St Vincent de Paul help homeless
families get a jump-start. Food stamps cannot be used to purchase cleaning
and hygiene products.
One
recipient of our project was Misty, a young single mother who received
a basket of supplies. Misty said this gift helped her start a new life
and boosted her morale. “The future is always bright so the future
is always what you make of it, now I have a beginning so now it’s
up to me to build on it”.
