Assistance
League of Eugene’s Operation School Bell is
part of a nationwide project through National Assistance League. Operation
School Bell can be found in almost every Assistance League chapter throughout
the country. This project provides clothing for children from low-income
families in the community.
Our
project gives at risk school age children in Eugene and nearby schools,
an entire set of clothing. The clothing package contains everything
from underwear and socks to a warm winter jacket, a shoe voucher and,
on request, a bra voucher. Clothing is also given to several outreach
programs.
The
fall of 2004 marked the twentieth year of Operation School Bell for
our chapter. This project has steadily grown from serving 150 children
in 1984 to over 800 hundred children in the 2003-2004 school year. Since
it’s inception, Operation School Bell has provided clothing for
over 14,000 children in the area.
Positive
feedback from recipients makes the project all the more worthwhile.
A homeless girl who wrote that the clothes she received would enable
her to stay warm through the winter; the boy who was “so proud
to be wearing clothes showing no holes” and the kindergartner
who wrote that he “looked very hanson” (sic) wearing his
new clothes, are just a few examples that what we do truly makes a difference.
