Assistance League of Eugene provides soft cuddly teddy bears to agencies that help children and seniors in crisis situations. Operation Hug a Bears are given to juvenile victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or to those in need of comfort in times of great stress. This project began in 1988 and has gifted over 2,000 bears to date.

All Eugene Police Department patrol cars carry bears to be given when a stressful situation arises. Most cases involve a parent or parents being arrested, violence in the residence, abandonment, vehicle accidents or mechanical breakdowns, and residential fires. Operation Hug A Bears are gifted to other agencies on an annual basis.
